HOW TO COUNSEL WHEN YOU'RE NOT A COUNSELOR
Most of us, guidance counselors, did not dream of being one when we were kids. We didn’t raise our hands in class and say, “When I grow up, I want to help teenagers choose universities by best fit, not by rankings.” So, how did we end up here? And if we didn’t plan for this, we probably didn’t train for this either, especially for a job that you have to be part researcher, part therapist, part teacher, part tour guide, part linguist, part mathematician, and so much more. So, how can we help when we do not know how? How can we say and do the right things, if no one has ever taught us what those are? In this session, we will discuss and use our personal experiences to understand how we can become effective resources for our students, even if we are not professionally trained to deal with the social and emotional baggage that college and career counselling carry. We’ll talk about how to help manage families’ expectations that you can make anything magically happen. And, we’ll go over how you should use the school as your ally, making sure they understand what your role is and how they can support you.
